Forest School

Forest School is a child centered nature based programme. Providing regular long term opportunities for children to explore, play and take supported risks in a woodland setting.

Woodland Corner has a glade area with a variety of trees, shrubs, wildflowers and wildlife, with a gate leading into a private woodland.

Benefits of Forest School

Forest School nurtures and supports all aspects of a child’s development and learning, including confidence and self-esteem and building resilience. This long term approach spans the seasons, providing opportunities to observe and learn about the changes that take place in the natural world, leading to increased care and respect for our environment.

The regular physical activities that take place within Forest School support building muscle strength, coordination and balance. Team working with others creates a sense of community, building social skills including sharing, cooperating and supporting each other.

Activities offered within Forest School can include:

  • Tree climbing
  • Den building
  • Rope walkways, hammocks and rope swings
  • Tool use
  • Foraging for natural materials / loose parts play
  • Clay use, mud play, craft
  • Play in all weather

Some degree of risk and challenge is integral to, and a necessary part of, play. A key Forest School principle is providing freedom, control and opportunities to take risks. The use of risk assessments ensures that we are clearly measuring and documenting the risks we have identified within the setting. These are held in the Forest School Handbook located securely in the office.

Session Structure

  • Welcome at the Log circle, reminder of our Forest School “agreements”
  • The Magic Box
  • Today you could….Children explore / play/ learn / create / contemplate / relax
  • Musical instrument to bring back to the log circle
  • What have you enjoyed today? What would you like to see again next week?
  • See you next week!

Forest School Agreements

We use our tapping sticks to agree to these before each session:

  • Being kind to ourselves
  • No pick no lick – not putting anything in our mouths as this could make us poorly. Staying within the boundary of yellow cones
  • Being kind to the woodland I.e. putting back any bugs that we put in a bug pot to look at
  • Being kind to each other I.e. being careful when playing with sticks, dragging sticks longer than our arm, taking turns and sharing

What you can do to help us

  • Send your child into preschool dressed for Forest School. This means some long layers, waterproofs and old shoes or wellies. The weather can be changeable!
  • Any feedback on our Forest School would be much appreciated as our new Forest School leader begins.
